About August

August is a leading manufacturer of smart lock products. Founded in 2012 in San Francisco, the company launched its first product in 2013. The first-generation August lock—designed by Yves Behar from FuseProject—quickly became a success among U.S. consumers. This allowed August to raise additional venture capital from top venture firms such as Maveron and Bessemer before the company was acquired in 2017 by Assa Abloy.

Under the umbrella of Assa Abloy, August has continued to expand its product line and lend its engineering know-how to other Assa Abloy brands. For example, August now powers all Yale locks' backend services.

In 2022, Assa Abloy decided to sell August+Yale to Fortune Brands. This decision was made after the U.S. Department of Justice objected to Assa Abloy's purchase of Kwikset (another popular U.S. smart lock brand). In order to move forward with the Kwikset purchase while addressing the DoJ antitrust filing, Assa Abloy decided to sell Yale+August.

Today, the company continues to operate independently while release best-in-class consumer lock products.
